These days people are becoming more health conscious, and a lot of the focus is on eating right, losing weight and getting regular exercise. While these are all important, there may be one thing that folks are overlooking in their quest to get and stay healthy. And that is, are they getting enough sleep?

Experts say sleep is important in maintaining good health. Without it, people become susceptible to health problems such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, depression and obesity.

Although a growing number of adults and Baby Boomers are interested in improving or maintaining their health, they have also embraced a lifestyle that forces them to sleep less. There are too many distractions at night: TV, the Internet, bars or restaurants that stay open all night, or simply thinking about the pressures of the upcoming work week.

SLEEP IS OFTEN THE FIRST THING TO BE PUT ON THE BACK BURNER.

So how much sleep do you really need? According to a C-Health newsletter, most adults need about seven hours of sleep a night, and children and adolescents need even more, about nine to 10 hours per night.

However, everyone is different, and the amount of sleep needed can vary, from five to about 10 hours per night.

These may be signs that you are not getting the right amount of sleep for you.

Columnist and retired Canadian Forces pilot Dale Nielsen believes we have a tendency to underestimate the amount of sleep we actually need and we over-estimate our ability to cope with the lack of sleep.

“Every hour of sleep we lose accumulates as sleep debt. If we short ourselves an hour a night Monday through Friday, we have accumulated five hours of sleep debt. A weekend is not enough to settle that debt. Many of us carry this through for weeks on end,” he wrote in a recent column.

The only antidote for chronic fatigue is more sleep, he continued. We need to sleep longer each night over an extended period to erase the sleep debt, and to keep from starting another sleep debt cycle.

We often feel we are making up for a late Saturday night by sleeping late Sunday morning. The problem is if we do that, we are not really ready for sleep at our normal time on Sunday night. We don’t sleep well and we tend to perform poorly on Monday, he continued.

SO WHAT CAN YOU DO TO TRY TO GET MORE SLEEP?

Dr. Maureen Ceresney, a psychiatrist specializing in sleep disorders and addictions at the Sleep Disorders Clinic at UBC Hospital, offers a few tips to help people get a better night’s sleep.

Get up at the same time every day, this means on the weekends, too.

Have a regular bedtime routine (such as brushing your teeth, having warm milk or meditating).

Give yourself time to relax and time to sleep. “You need time to unwind in the evening before bed,” she says. Relaxing with calm activities such as reading a book or listening to calm music help the body and mind slow down. Fit between six and 10 hours of sleep time into your schedule

Other things that may help to get the best sleep possible include:

Get regular exercise.

Spend some time outside every day. Exposure to sunlight helps keep the body’s internal clock on track.

If you nap, make it a short one (30 to 45 minutes in the early afternoon only).

Make your bedroom comfortable, quiet and dark, and not too warm (a temperature more than 75 degrees hinders sleep).

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU ARE GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP? HERE ARE SOME CLUES THAT MIGHT INDICATE YOU’RE SLEEP DEPRIVED:

Do you need an alarm clock to jar you awake?

Do you sleep much longer on the weekends?

Do you feel tired through the day?

Do you have early-morning headaches?

Do you doze off in public places (meetings or movie theatres)?

Do you feel dozy while driving?

Do you have trouble concentrating?

Besides dreaming and restlessness in the night, snoring is among the natural processes our bodies produce even during very deep sleep. It is a burden in the body that is made by particular chemical mechanisms that seem to clash when the body is at its most restful state. Snoring is noisy breathing that happens when muscle in the throat partially block the airway and it becomes too relaxed causing air flowing through the passageway to resonate across the soft roof of the mouth. Snoring has numerous causes, not all of which can be treated by a single cure – that said, holistic curatives for snoring are often an impressive solution to snoring problems.

So, how to stop snoring: It is advisable to maintain a healthy weight and body size. To greatly improve our health, some traits that we have become used to enjoying must be restricted. Maintaining a healthy weight makes you less vulnerable to dangers involved in snoring. An individual who is heavy may have more problems with snoring than an individual who is not chubby. One reason for this opinion is that they will have a thicker neck that will compact the muscle used during breathing. Our throats are not designed to take surplus fat as this can create breathing problems which leads to snoring.

Those people who smoke and drink are probably more likely to suffer from snoring problems due to the discomfort they develop. The chemicals originate in tobacco products can maybe alter the protecting tissues in the respiratory tract which can lead to harm from the chemical substances found in cigarettes and cigars. The outstanding building of mucus that builds up the obstructions comes from a particular type of cell in the lining of the esophagus that changes into another form once smoke from cigarettes passes through it.

We feel more laid-back when we drink alcohol thus increasing the chance of a bad night. Snoring happens when the muscular tissue of the throat relax while asleep therefore causing the possibility that the muscle will intervene with the natural flow of air in and out of the lungs making hard to stop snoring.

Stitching a tennis ball into the rear of pajama tops was the earliest method of reducing snoring. Changing the position that you sleep might help you with your snoring cures. What you will discover when you alter the position that you sleep in is that your jaw will not hang back and cause blockages on the already narrow air passage. The majority of people propose sleeping in a side ward attitude to stop the relaxed muscle from collapsing. To lessen the pressure on the airways it is suggested to sleep on your stomach, if you can put up with it, as in this position you are less subject to snoring. It is also frequently advised that you should elevate your bed to 30 degrees since this height is known to decrease the collapse of the tissues in the throat.

Disclaimer: Always consult your doctor before taking any medical advice.

But when snoring is a sign of sleep apnea, a condition that causes breathing to be interrupted repeatedly during the night due to airway obstructions, it can signal some dire consequences.

Researchers are certain that obesity is a major contributor to sleep apnea, but studies have also found that the condition leads to high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease and diabetes, among other problems.

A report in the journal Diabetes Care in June noted that out of 306 obese patients with type 2 diabetes, testing found that 87 percent of them also had obstructive sleep apnea, although most of them did not know it.

More than half of those tested stopped breathing between 16 and 20 times per hour (moderate apnea) or more than 30 times an hour (severe).

But the sleep-obesity loop is even more complicated. Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, studying more than 200 people with sleep-related breathing disorders, found that as their conditions worsened, they actually burned more calories when they were at rest.

This is not the way nature intended. We’re supposed to burn fewer calories when resting. It’s estimated that some 12 million Americans have sleep apnea.

Even a temporary onset of apnea, which often occurs in pregnant women, can cause problems.

About 4 percent of pregnant women develop gestational diabetes, in which a woman without previously diagnosed diabetes develops high blood-sugar levels during pregnancy.

Half of nearly 300 participants with sleep apnea and diabetes went into a group behavioral weight-loss program that included portion-controlled diets and prescribed 175 minutes of exercise a week. The control group got three lectures on diabetes management, diet and physical activity over the yearlong study.

Other research shows that sleep disruption can also set the brain up for disease. A mouse study reported last week by the Washington University School of Medicine found that chronic sleep deprivation makes the brain plaques that characterize Alzheimer’s disease appear earlier and more often.

Medical professionals treating Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative illnesses have long noted that many patients experience disturbed sleep. But until recently, it was thought that sleep disruption was more a byproduct of disease than a contributor.

And scientists at the University of California, San Diego, showed that treating sleep apnea in patients with Alzheimer’s actually seemed to improve cognitive function.

Specifically, putting patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s and sleep apnea on a machine that delivers pressurized air into the lungs during sleep over six weeks resulted in improved verbal learning and mental processing.

While the mouse study indicates that sleep disruption may actually accelerate the disease process, the California scientists said the improvements they registered could simply be the result of improved oxygen levels in the brain and a clearer mind as a result of getting a better night’s sleep.

Earlier studies in adults with sleep apnea, but no dementia, have also shown improvements in mental function after receiving the pressurized air therapy.

MONDAY, Sept. 28 (HealthDay News) — People with sleep apnea who are also obese may triple the chances of eliminating their sleep problems by losing weight, a new study suggests.Losing about 10 percent of their body weight was enough to bring on total or near-total remission, said Gary Foster, head of the Center for Obesity Research and Education at Temple University in Philadelphia, and lead author of the study.

“It’s been clear that obesity increases the risk of sleep apnea but less clear that if obese people or people with type 2 diabetes lost weight, it would result in significant improvements in their sleep apnea — and it did,” said Foster.

People who are overweight or obese are much more likely to have obstructive sleep apnea, a condition in which a person’s breathing stops or becomes very shallow, sometimes several hundred times a night and sometimes for as long as a minute, according to the American Sleep Apnea Association.

“The soft palate in the back of mouth falls down and blocks the airway,” said Dr. Mitchell Roslin, chief of bariatric surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. “When you get to people with serious levels of obesity, it’s virtually impossible to find those without [this type of] sleep apnea.”

The condition can lead to cardiovascular problems, including stroke, and can raise the risk for dying prematurely.

“It really has tremendous detrimental effects on the cardiovascular system,” Roslin said.

The study involved 264 obese men and women who also had type 2 diabetes and obstructive sleep apnea. They were randomly assigned to an intensive behavioral program intended to encourage weight loss or to a less intensive set of group sessions that mainly addressed the issue of diabetes management.

After a year, those in the intensive program had lost an average of about 24 pounds, compared with slightly more than a one-pound average weight loss for the others.

Those who lost the weight also saw a substantial reduction in the number of sleep apnea episodes they experienced, with more than three times as many people in the intensive group experiencing complete remission (13.6 percent versus 3.5 percent).

“The greatest benefit was seen in men and those with severe apnea,” Foster said.

Any amount of weight loss brought on an improvement, but those who lost about 10 percent of their original body weight saw the greatest effect. “Any weight loss is good,” Foster said.

Most experts recommend 10 percent as the weight loss needed to improve sleep apnea.

However, the study also found that people whose weight remained stable experienced a worsening in their sleep apnea. Just why that occurred remains unclear.

“This is one of the first and certainly the largest study ever conducted so we’re at the point in the field, unfortunately, where we’re just describing the effect,” Foster said.

The study, published Sept. 28 in the Archives of Internal Medicine, does seem to confirm what common sense and experience have shown.

“We’ve seen that when patients gain five to 10 pounds, their sleep apnea is much worse. If they lose five to 10 pounds, the sleep apnea is much better,” said Dr. Hormoz Ashtyani, director of pulmonary critical care and sleep medicine at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey. “It’s usually not a resolution, but it’s a significant improvement.”

If you don’t want an obese child who is likely to smoke and flunk school, then turn off the television and put them to bed, a childhood researcher says.

At the Early Childhood Education conference in Queenstown on Saturday , Dr Bob Hancox said excessive television watching was as bad as a poor diet or inactivity when it came to obesity.

Speaking to The Southland Times yesterday, Dr Hancox said if all children watched less than two hours of television daily, obesity would be cut by about 15 per cent.

“If people are watching television they are not exercising,” he said. “There is also evidence that people eat more and eat different things while watching television.”

Every hour of television children watched beyond two hours meant they were about 15 per cent more likely to leave school without a qualification and about 25 per cent less likely to get a university degree.

They were also more likely to take up smoking and develop attention difficulties, he said.

The comments come as New Zealanders watch more and more television, as well as trawl the internet and play computer games.

Last year television watching in New Zealand was higher than ever, with the average person aged 5 and up watching more than three hours daily.

Dr Hancox also said for obesity, lack of sleep was as bad as television.

Children between 5 and 11 who had less than 11 hours’ sleep were far more likely to become obese, he said.

Dr Hancox is the deputy director of Otago University’s Multidisciplinary Heath and Development Research Unit, which is tracking the lives of 1000 New Zealanders born in 1972 and 1973. The study’s previous check on the group was at age 32 in 2005. Another check would be done next year, he said.

While the group had grown up when television was the main medium, the study would probably also apply to the internet and computer games today, he said.

The American Academy of Paediatrics recommended children should not have more than two hours of television time a day, he said.

“I don’t think that’s an unreasonable limit to aim for, it would certainly be less than most children are watching at the moment.”

The academy also recommends children under 2 not watch any television.

When you’re learning about something new, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of relevant information available. This informative article should help you focus on the central points.

Having a sleep disorder can be very disruptive to everyday life. Sleep deprived people are usually excessively tired and sleepy. They tend to become irritable and very emotional. At times they become a danger, not only to themselves, but also to those around them.

Some people use alternative, natural ways to lessen the effects of their sleep disorder. Many people focus on diet and nutrition, while others use herbs and supplements. Still others believe in the positive effect of exercise, relaxation and sensory techniques, meditation or behavioral and cognitive strategies. Often people use a combination of these approaches to help alleviate the symptoms of their sleep disorder.

A healthy diet is essential for optimal energy and a restful sleep. Avoiding certain foods is as important as including others in your daily diet. Eating a wide variety of foods and drinking plenty of water will keep your body well- balanced and provide a more stable energy level. Avoiding food that is grown, treated or processed with chemicals, and limiting the amount of sugar and caffeine will also help your overall physical condition. Many foods promote a restful sleep and are helpful in relieving some of the symptoms of certain sleep disorders. Eating the proper snack before bedtime can increase natural serotonin levels. Serotonin acts as a natural sedative and is made in the body from the amino acid tryptophan. Foods that a re rich in tryptophan include chicken, turkey, cheese, cottage cheese, fish, milk, nuts, avocados and bananas.

Many people use herbs and natural supplements as an alternative approach to treating their sleep disorder. There are many nutritional supplements and herbal products on the market. It is important to know how a specific product acts on the body as well as on the specific sleep disorder.. For example many people with restless leg syndrome have an iron or folic acid deficiency. Taking an iron supplement may alleviate some of the symptoms of RLS. Many herbs are well known for promoting a natural sleep. A clamming tea of chamomile or lemon balm can be very relaxing to many people that suffer from a sleep disorder.

Exercise and relaxation techniques, whether used alone or together, can reduce stress and muscle tension. Many people that use these techniques to lessen the symptoms of a sleep disorder do these before going to bed. They not only ease physical tension but they calm the mind and prepare the body to sleep. These techniques include mindful exercise, progressive muscle relaxation, breathing exercises and yoga.

Meditation and visualization are also used by some sufferers of sleep disorders to calm the body before sleep. Two common forms of mediation are meditation on the breath and mantra meditation. Both of these types can have a positive effect on relieving stress and calming the body. Many people focus their energy on a healing visualization as a method of alternative therapy for their sleep disorder.

Sensory techniques that people use to lessen the symptoms of their sleep disorder are hydrotherapy, and aroma therapy. The two main techniques included in hydrotherapy, which means water therapy, are relaxing in an Epsom salt bath and a lymph stimulating footbath. Aroma therapy includes the use of therapeutic essential oils in baths, massage oils, room sprays, and simple inhalants.

Now that we’ve covered those aspects of Sleep Disorders, let’s turn to some of the other factors that need to be considered.

Alternative behavioral and cognitive strategies used to combat the symptoms of a sleep disorder include improving a person’s sleep hygiene, stimulus control therapy and journal writing.

Alternative practices and techniques can help many types of sleep disorders. Often they are used in conjunction with traditional medication and practices.

Every night around the world, millions of people go to bed knowing that their much needed rest is going to be shattered by someone snoring. There are many ways to alleviate this problem but if you want to stop snoring naturally you will find there are some things you can do to help. We will look at how changing your sleeping position, maybe loosing some weight or avoiding certain foods and drink can really help save your relationships and to get a decent nights sleep. Hopefully you will realize by reading this article that you can avoid the need to resort to drugs, sprays or even surgery to alleviate your snoring.

The first thing to try is changing your sleeping position. Quite often people will find that just by sleeping on their side instead of their back they can stop snoring naturally with no other means. Try wedging a pillow beside your body or sewing a tennis ball into the back of your night clothes to stop yourself rolling onto your back whilst asleep. This is so easy to do but maybe not effective if you’re also overweight.

Loosing excessive weight is also another way to stop snoring naturally as it has been shown that overweight people often carry some of this weight around their chest and neck. This causes pressure on the muscles in those areas resulting in the increase chance of snoring. Of course one of the best ways to loose weight is to exercise and this will also help to alleviate snoring in other ways.

Exercise will not only help you loose weight but will also have many other health benefits. Regular exercise helps strengthen your heart and lungs, things that can help your body to help itself to stop snoring naturally. Obviously your diet can also help with your exercise program but did you know that the food you eat can also have an effect on making you snore?

It may be that you react in such a way to certain foods that when eaten shortly before bedtime can make it more likely that you will start snoring. Keeping a check on what you eat and how that affects your snoring can help you find out if this is the case, but a more likely culprit is drinking alcohol.

Alcohol relaxes the muscles in your throat and by doing so often results in you snoring even if you normally don’t or if you do, makes you snore even more loudly than usual. Sorry to say, but if you really want to stop snoring naturally it may mean no more than cutting out that glass of wine late in the evening!

Can’t sleep? You have plenty of company. About half of all adults experience insomnia on occasion, and 1 in 10 battle insomnia on a regular basis. Maybe you know how important good nutrition and exercise are for your beauty, but do you know sleep is crucial too?
Sleep is closely related to our beauty. Sleep restores our bodies and spirits. One of its most important functions is to clean metabolic waste, the by-products of our bodies’ machinery. Perfect expulsion of toxin during our sleep is a practical way to keep our beauty.
When you don’t get enough sleep, the body produces excess cortisol, a hormone that breaks down skin cells. Get enough rest and you’ll produce more HGH (human growth hormone), which helps skin remain thick, more “elastic,” and less likely to wrinkle.
To avoid puffy, bloodshot eyes, dark under-eye circles and a pale washed-out complexion — and for peak alertness and energy, you need at least eight hours of sleep a night.
Go to bed when you’re tired. If you’re having ongoing sleep troubles, don’t worry so much about the fact that it’s almost midnight and you have to get up in less than seven hours. Anxiety and depression top the list of reasons people have trouble sleeping. Just relax yourself and force yourself to stay in bed when you’re not sleepy is just going to contribute to more tossing and turning.
You’d better take a hot bath, shower or sauna before bed. When body temperature is raised in the late evening, it will fall at bedtime, facilitating sleep.
Sometimes wrong pillow can cause neck and back pain. So keep your bedroom at a cool, comfortable temperature, and make sure your bed, pillows and linens are comfy. If your pillow is too soft or too firm, you’ll toss and turn all night, breaking the REM sleep cycle.
Sleep in complete darkness or as close as possible. Keep the light off when you go to the bathroom at night. As soon as you turn on that light you will for that night immediately cease all production of the important sleep aid melatonin. If there is even the tiniest bit of light in the room it can disrupt your circadian rhythm and your pineal gland’s production of melatonin and serotonin. An eye mask can help to block out the remaining light if there’s no condition for the nearly or complete darkness sleeping environment.
Don’t turn on the light even though you wake up in the middle of the night, too. This tells the brain it’s morning and it stops producing melatonin. If you wake up within an hour of the time you’re supposed to get up, then you just get up.
Never use loud alarm clocks. Most of us already use an alarm to wake up in the morning, but it is very stressful on the body to be awoken suddenly. Suddenly wake up will do harm to our biological clock in our body. If you are regularly getting enough sleep, they should be unnecessary. Just form a good bed time habit, sleep at a regular time, and you will wake up naturally in the next morning.

Sixty percent of men and thirty percent of women are known to snore. Seventy percent of the afflicted seem to have found relief from treatments for snoring problem. That is a very good percentage. It encourages one to explore the various treatments for snoring problem.

Before selecting a treatment for snoring problem, one needs to identify the reasons causing the person to snore. Snoring problems could be due to increased body weight, consumption of alcohol, consumption of heavy fat-rich meals, smoking, hereditary factors like jaw structure, sleeping position, etc. Selection of treatment for snoring problem should be based on the cause of snoring.

General treatments for snoring problem:

If snoring is caused due to excess weight then reducing weight is the strategy to be adopted. If it is because of alcohol consumption then reducing alcohol consumption is the treatment. One should abstain from smoking if that is causing one to snore. Some snore when their air passage is blocked or obstructed due to infection or inflammation. These people should take medications to remove these conditions.

Some snore only while they are sleeping on their backs. They could adopt simple remedial action like pinning up a sock with a hard small ball inside to the back portion of their pajama pants. This will make it uneasy for them to sleep on their back. They will immediately revert back to their sides whenever they turn on their back. Tilting the head side of the bed and not using pillows of large height has given relief to some snorers. The snoring of such snorers is dependent on their sleeping positions. Specially designed snore no more pillows can also be tried.

Non-surgical treatments for snoring problem:

Those who continue to snore despite the general treatments mentioned above need to try snore mouthpieces. Snore mouthpieces are also called snore aids or snoring aids. These are available over the medical counter. Dentists provide custom-made snore mouthpieces. These anti-snoring devices position the tongue and jaw in a way which controls snoring.

Anti-snore sprays lubricate the throat tissue for smooth air passage. Palate stiffening injections – snoreplasty, somnoplasty and carbon dioxide laser palatoplasty can also be tried.

Surgical treatments for snoring problem:

In some severe cases surgical procedure is the last resort. Snoring in a child can be treated with removal of tonsils and trimming of soft palate. In adults, adenoids can be removed, large collapsible air passages can be reduced, throat end of the tongue can be reduced, the hard palate can be shortened or even reconstruction of jaws and nose can be tried.

In some people snoring indicates that they suffer sleep apnoea. The problem of sleep apnoea is characterized by the patient having narrow air passages. He does not get enough oxygen and wakes up gasping for air and sweating a lot. Such people should not ignore this severe problem. They should immediately get checked and treated by a physician.

Snoring gives disturbed sleep. Take treatment to stop snoring. You need to have a sound sleep for good health.

Snoring is a dysfunction that is caused in the mechanism of the human body. The muscles in your soft palate, throat and tongue relax when you are in deep sleep, closing the airway partially.

Home remedies for snoring can be very effective in providing you relief from this problem. These home remedies for snoring are not only easy to implement but they can prove to be potential solutions in eliminating or controlling snoring.

Excess fat reduces the space of air passages through which we breathe, therefore correct fat should be sustained to control snoring.

Nasal congestion due to mucous and respiratory problems cause snoring, hence should be treated at the earliest. Inhaling steam before going to bed is the best remedy for minimizing nasal congestion.

Weight loss is also one of the important stop snoring home remedies. This is because weight loss actually contributes to the condition in the first place. Excessive weight in your neck and chest can cause enough pressure on your muscles. This, in turn, disrupts the normal breathing process. Thus, if you are overweight, then you should consider taking on a diet plan.

One simple remedy is to elevate your head with pillows or raise the head of your bed several inches. This reduces the chances of the throat muscle completely blocking your air passages when they relax in sleep. Sleep on your side, not on your back, which causes your tongue and soft palate to fall back, narrowing the airway.

Someone that drinks alcohol can suffer from snoring because the muscles get relaxed. The home remedy for snoring for someone that drinks is in reality a simple one – stop drinking. Alright, this isn’t always easy for everyone and you may finish up needing a little extra help from a specialist but the chances are that if you desire a better sleep, then you’ll do it.

To treat snoring, first we have to know the cause. The chief cause of snoring is relaxation of throat muscles. These tend to relax when you are sleeping, and if they are too relaxed because of fatty tissues, they will obstruct the passage of air to the lungs. Air that is moving in and out, makes these fatty tissues and throat muscles vibrate, which produces the annoying sound.

Using a body pillow to lean against with your back – it will help in keeping you off your back while sleeping. One other way of doing this is having some small pockets sew into the back of a tee shirt. What you want to do is put some walnuts into them, or a golf ball or something a little larger like a tennis ball.

Another one of the home remedies for snoring is just a simple headband. What a lot of people don’t realize is that if you close your jaw, the pressure on your throat goes down and the airways open up. The more room for air to travel, the less likely you’ll snore. The headband should wrap around your head and jaw. This way it holds it up and you don’t snore.
